Abstract:

This study explores the editorial coverage of socioeconomic challenges amidst civil-military issues in the four leading newspapers of Pakistan from 2008 to 2018. The chosen time frame encompasses the tenure of two democratically elected governments and a period of substantial civil-military issues. The research methodology involved content analysis of data collected from the print media of Pakistan between March 17th, 2008, and May 31st, 2018. Index scores were calculated to compare the prominence of socioeconomic editorials to editorials addressing civil-military issues. A higher index score indicated greater importance given to socioeconomic problems relative to civil-military issues. The results of the analysis indicate varying levels of prominence assigned to these respective categories by different newspapers. Dawn newspaper emerged as the publication that allocated more significance and prominence to socioeconomic issues, while other newspapers such as The Nation, Daily Jang, and Nawa-i-Waqt assigned relatively similar levels of importance to both socioeconomic and civil-military issues. Overall, the findings of this study highlight a consistent pattern in the Pakistani press, where civil-military tensions are consistently highlighted and given prominence, while socioeconomic issues are significantly neglected. This indicates a failure of the press to fulfill its social responsibility in providing comprehensive coverage of issues that have a significant impact on society. The study emphasizes the need for the media to address this imbalance and prioritize the coverage of socioeconomic challenges in alignment with the social responsibility theory of the press.
